Matthew 6:16-18 : “And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”
Biblical Fasting is not something we do mindlessly. We are not trying to connect to the universe or chanting or emptying ourselves. In fact it’s just the opposite. Biblical Fasting is to meditate upon a specific scripture from the Word of God and request the Father in heaven to reveal His purpose for you with that particular verse or verses. Our mind is filled with the Holy Scriptures and we direct our thoughts to Jesus Christ and God Almighty.
Jesus said, “When you fast . . . ” This phrase implies that denying ourselves food is not optional. Jesus took this spiritual discipline as a given. He gives the impression that abstaining from eating happens frequently. The absence of food can be liberating. Focusing on physical food can overtake your life. Meal planning, grocery shopping, cost, food preparation, cooking, eating, clean-up. Fasting eliminates all of that. You are free to worship the Father in spirit and truth without the encumbrance of bodily processes disturbing your communion with the Father.
Biblical Fasting can bring power down from heaven. When performed with a pure heart while praying the Word of God, it may impart the gift of faith. The gift of faith is the supernatural power of God. This is the kind of faith that can move mountains. And it can move the mountain of excess fat you are carrying. Let’s practice Biblical Fasting to get the power of God working for us in our endeavor to shift this weight.
