Yeshua And Elijah – 2 Prophets
Yeshua and Elijah were both prophets of God who raised a widow’s son from the dead. A widow’s life, property, and assets would hang in the balance without a son as protector.
We know also that the prophet Elijah was very discouraged about the hearts of the people of Israel, because he told the LORD, “I am the only prophet left in Israel (1Kings 18:22). ”
At the beginning of his ministry, Yeshua similarly tells the people in the synagogue, “A prophet is not accepted in his own hometown.”
Beginning in Luke 4:22 Lord Jesus compares the crowd’s rejection of Elijah with their own rejection of Himself.
Luk 4:22 Everyone spoke well of Him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from His lips. “How can this be?” they asked. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”
Luk 4:23 Then Jesus said to the crowd, “I’m sure you will quote me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself !’ By which you will mean:- ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’
Luk 4:24 “But I tell you the truth,” Yeshua said, ” no prophet is accepted in His own hometown.”
Luk 4:25 “Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land.
Luk 4:26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner—a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
Luk 4:27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian.”
Yeshua and Elijah were similar in that they both were prophets sent by LORD God. Elijah was sent to the people of Israel. Yeshua was sent to both Israel and all mankind. When Yeshua reminded the people of the synagogue that God did not send Elijah to a widow in Israel but sent him to a widow in Northern Israel, they were furious. They wanted to kill Jesus.
While on earth, Yeshua told us that He was The prophet like Moses who was sent from His Father in heaven.
Deu 18:15 Moses continued, “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.
Deu 18:18 I will raise up a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell the people everything I command him.
In the book, “The Acts of the Apostles” Peter tells us:-
Act 3:22 Moses said, ‘The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from among your own people. Listen carefully to everything He tells you. Anyone who will not listen to that Prophet will be completely cut off from God’s people.’
Then Peter continued:
Act 3:24 “Starting with Samuel, every prophet spoke about what is happening today.
Act 3:25 You are the children of those prophets, and you are included in the covenant God promised to your ancestors. For God said to Abraham, ‘Through your descendants all the families on earth will be blessed.’
Act 3:26 When God raised up His servant, Yeshua, He sent Him first to you people of Israel, to bless you by turning each of you back from your sinful ways.”
What say you? Who do you say Jesus is?
